Where to eat in Barro Alto: everyday Goiás cooking
Pay-by-weight lunch, skewers and snacks at night — and the Goiás cuisine of pequi, guariroba and pamonha.
Updated on October 4, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
Eating in Barro Alto means eating like inland Goiás: a hearty, early lunch, home cooking, and a more relaxed evening scene with snacks, pizza and grilled skewers. There is no tourist food scene — and that is exactly the charm for those who like real food.
How the day works
- Lunch (about 11 am to 2 pm): the main meal. Mostly pay-by-weight buffets (self-service por quilo) and set plates (prato feito) with rice, beans, meat, chicken, salad, cassava and farofa.
- Afternoon: bakeries and snack bars with pão de queijo (cheese bread), savoury pastries and coffee.
- Evening: snack bars, pizzerias and skewer stands. On Sunday and Monday evenings some places close — check first.
Goiás flavours to look for
- Rice or chicken with pequi — the Cerrado fruit with a strong aroma and flavour. Careful: don’t bite the stone, it has fine spines; scrape the flesh with your teeth.
- Guariroba, a bitter palm heart typical of Goiás cooking.
- Empadão goiano, a pie filled with chicken, sausage, cheese, guariroba and egg.
- Pamonha, savoury or sweet, made from fresh corn.
- Cerrado fruit sweets, home-made doce de leite and baru, a native Cerrado nut.
