Santa Rita do Novo Destino and Vila Propício, Barro Alto’s border neighbours, are small farming municipalities — together with Barro Alto they are among the largest natural rubber producers in Goiás, according to IBGE.

Serra da Mesa Lake

North of Barro Alto lies Serra da Mesa Lake, one of Brazil’s largest reservoirs, formed by the dam on the Tocantins River. Secondary sources list Barro Alto among the municipalities with land flooded by the lake. Towns with boating and fishing facilities on its shores, such as Uruaçu and Niquelândia, are the usual gateways.
