Barro Alto is a municipality in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) of Goiás with about 11,000 inhabitants (IBGE estimate for 2026: 10,967), about 185 km from Anápolis, 200 km from Brasília and 245 km from Goiânia by road (approximate distances, depending on the route). It is not a classic tourist destination: the town lives off nickel mining, farming and the services that support these activities. That defines the kind of trip — and this guide was made for it.

Who usually goes to Barro Alto

Step by step to plan

  1. Choose your route. By car, the main links are the BR-080 (federal highway) and the GO-080 (state highway). There are intercity buses from Goiânia and Goianésia. See how to get there.
  2. Choose the season. The Cerrado has two well-defined seasons: rain from November to March and a severe dry spell in winter (June to September in the Southern Hemisphere). See when to go.
  3. Book accommodation early, especially on weekdays, when company teams occupy rooms. See where to stay.
  4. Note down useful phone numbers before you leave: the City Hall, the 24-hour municipal hospital and emergency numbers are in public services and useful phone numbers.
  5. Plan a realistic itinerary. You can see the town in a day; the region needs more time. See the itineraries.

What to expect

  • Inland-town pace: shops concentrated in the centre, business hours with a lunch break at some establishments and less activity on Sundays.
  • Simple attractions: the Our Lady of Abadia main church (Igreja Matriz), the urban lake known as Lago Serra do Níquel, the Fairgrounds (Parque de Exposições) and the Cerrado landscapes and ridges around town. See things to do.
  • Essential services in town, with a 24-hour municipal hospital, a Correios (post office) branch and basic shops. State services such as Vapt Vupt (the state one-stop service centre) are in Goianésia.
  • Area code (DDD) 62 and general CEP (postcode) 76390-000.

Before you leave home

  • Fill up and check your car: stretches between towns can be long.
  • Bring sunscreen, water and light clothing in the dry season; a raincoat between November and March.
  • Confirm bookings and opening hours directly with establishments — this guide does not publish prices or hours without a source.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barro Alto a tourist town?

Not in the traditional sense. It is a small town (10,371 inhabitants in the 2022 Census), known for nickel mining and farming. People usually go there for work, to visit family or for local events, such as the town's anniversary and ExpoAgro.

Do you need a car to go to Barro Alto?

It is not essential: there are intercity bus lines regulated by AGR (the state transport regulator) linking Goiânia and Goianésia to Barro Alto. But a car gives much more freedom to get around the region, where distances are long.
