Barro Alto is a small town with moderate growth: it went from 8,716 inhabitants in the 2010 Census to 10,371 in the 2022 Census and has 10,967 in IBGE’s (Brazil’s national statistics institute) 2026 estimate. People who move here usually come for work — and find an inland-town routine, with essential services in town and the rest in Goianésia, Uruaçu, Anápolis or Goiânia.
Work and income
According to IBGE:
- average monthly wage of formal workers: 3.0 minimum wages (2024);
- employed population: 45.3% (2022), a high proportion for small towns;
- GDP per capita: R$ 162.6 thousand (2023), driven by mining and metallurgy — a figure that does not reflect household income, but the size of industrial output in the municipality.
Housing
- The market is small and feels the arrival of company teams: rentals can be in short supply.
- To rent, insist on a written contract and an inspection; to buy, ask for the up-to-date property registration from the registry office (cartório). Full tips in the business directory — Property.
- The town has received housing developments under public programmes; in March 2026, 44 houses from the state programme “Casas a Custo Zero” (zero-cost homes) were handed over, according to the press.
Schools
- The municipal network includes primary schools (ensino fundamental) and CMEIs (early childhood education centres), according to the Department of Education.
- IDEB (national school quality index) for public schools (2025): 7.4 in the early years and 5.5 in the later years of primary school (IBGE).
- School enrolment rate, ages 6 to 14: 98.7% (2022).
- There is an integrated SESI SENAI unit in town (part of Brazil’s industry-run education and training system), opened in 2008, offering schooling and technical courses.

Health
- Hospital Municipal Ângela Emília de Jesus, with 24-hour care.
- Basic Health Units (UBS) in the centre, in the Extrema neighbourhood and in the district of Souzalândia, according to the City Hall.
- More complex cases are referred to larger towns in the region, according to SUS (Brazil’s public health system) referral rules.
Water, sewage and infrastructure
- Water: supplied by Saneago.
- Sewage: the City Hall’s responsibility. IBGE recorded only 2.5% of households with adequate sewage disposal in 2022 — most use septic tanks. It is worth asking about this when choosing a property.
- Trees: 78% of public streets were tree-lined in 2022 (IBGE).
Services found elsewhere
- Vapt Vupt (state one-stop service centre for documents, Detran driving and vehicle services and other state services): nearest unit in Goianésia.
