One-day itinerary in Barro Alto
Morning in the centre, a Goiás lunch and late afternoon by the urban lake: the town in one day, at an easy pace.
Updated on October 4, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
One day is enough to get a feel for Barro Alto’s pace. The itinerary below is relaxed, all within the town itself, and works well for those passing through or with a day off during a work trip.
Morning: main church and centre
- Start at the Our Lady of Abadia main church (Igreja Matriz), on Avenida Dom Bosco. If you want to attend Mass, according to the Diocese there is a celebration at 6:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 8:00 on Sundays (check beforehand). Find out more in Our Lady of Abadia Parish.
- Walk through the centre to the Praça dos Três Poderes, where the City Hall and the Municipal Council stand. It is the administrative heart of the town, which became a municipality in 1958 — read the history of Barro Alto beforehand to recognise the landmarks.
- Make the most of the high-street shops for a coffee with pão de queijo (cheese bread) at a bakery.
Lunch: Goiás food
Have lunch early, as the town does: self-service or a “prato feito” (set plate of the day), with rice, beans, meat and, in season, pequi (a Cerrado fruit). See what to try in where to eat in Barro Alto.
Afternoon: Fairgrounds and landscape
- Stop by the Fairgrounds (Parque de Exposições), renovated by the City Hall and home to ExpoAgro. Outside events, you can only see it from the outside.
- If you have a car, take a short drive along the roads leading out of town to see the Cerrado and the ridges on the horizon — without entering private property. See nature in Barro Alto.
Late afternoon: the lake
End the day at Lago Serra do Níquel, the urban lake that has hosted the town’s anniversary celebrations. Sunset over the Cerrado, especially in the dry season, is usually beautiful. Do not go into the water without local advice.
Evening
Snack bars, pizzerias and “espetinho” (grilled skewer) stands liven up the evening. On Sunday and Monday evenings, some businesses close.
