Weekend in Barro Alto: a 2-day itinerary

Two days to experience the town at its own pace — even better if it coincides with a festival.

Updated on October 4, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

A weekend in Barro Alto makes most sense when you are visiting someone, enjoying an event or simply slowing down in the countryside. This itinerary assumes arrival on Friday night or early Saturday.

Saturday

Morning — the centre on foot. Start at the Our Lady of Abadia main church and walk to the Praça dos Três Poderes. Saturday morning is when the high-street shops are busiest.

Lunch — Goiás cooking. Rice with pequi, galinhada (chicken and rice), guariroba (a bitter palm heart): see where to eat.

Afternoon — the Cerrado. If you have a car, take a drive along the roads around town to see the ridges and the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) landscape. In the dry season, bring water; in the rainy season, avoid dirt roads. See nature in Barro Alto.

Late afternoon — the lake. Sunset at Lago Serra do Níquel, within the town limits.

Evening. Mass at 19:00 at the main church (time given by the Diocese; check) or a snack and a chat at one of the town’s snack bars.

Sunday

Morning — Mass or rest. The main church has Mass at 8:00 on Sundays, according to the Diocese.

Late morning — Souzalândia. A short drive to Souzalândia, a locality south of the town, helps you understand the municipality’s rural life. Traditional horseback rides (cavalgadas) set out from (or head to) there: the 2017 anniversary ride left from Souzalândia, and the Cavalgada Amigos do Estradão, in 2025, ended there.

Lunch and return. Have an early lunch and hit the road in daylight. See how to get there for the way back.

If it coincides with an event

  • Town anniversary (14 November): a programme with concerts and a horseback ride in previous editions.
  • ExpoAgro (September in 2026): rodeo, concerts and a packed Fairgrounds.

Check the events calendar and book accommodation well in advance for these dates.
