The history of Barro Alto begins near an altar. According to IBGE’s historical record, the chapel of Nossa Senhora d’Abadia (Our Lady of Abadia), built in 1956, attracted the first businesses and many houses around it — it was the seed of the town that would become a municipality two years later. See history of Barro Alto.

Our Lady of Abadia in Goiás

Devotion to Our Lady of Abadia is one of the oldest and most popular in inland Goiás, with pilgrimages and festivals in several towns in the state. In Barro Alto, it gives its name to the first chapel and the parish, and is at the centre of the town’s Catholic religious life.

Visiting

  • Respect celebration times and keep silent during Mass.
  • Photos inside: ask permission at the parish office.
  • The main church is in the centre: combine your visit with the one-day itinerary.
