Three-day itinerary through Barro Alto and the region

Barro Alto as a base to explore Goianésia, Uruaçu and Serra da Mesa Lake.

Updated on October 4, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

With three days and a car, Barro Alto becomes a base for a short tour of north-central Goiás. Distances are approximate (route calculated with OpenStreetMap data) and should be checked on the day.

Day 1 — Barro Alto

Follow the one-day itinerary: Our Lady of Abadia main church, the centre and Praça dos Três Poderes, a Goiás lunch, the Fairgrounds and sunset at the urban lake.

Day 2 — Goianésia (~50 km)

Goianésia is the largest nearby town and the service hub for Barro Alto.

  • Take care of any paperwork at Vapt Vupt (the state one-stop service centre; Av. Pará, 426, Carrilho) if you need state services.
  • Enjoy the wider range of shops and food of a bigger town.
  • Return to Barro Alto in the late afternoon via the GO-080.

Day 3 — Uruaçu and Serra da Mesa Lake (~63 km to Uruaçu)

Uruaçu, on the BR-153, is the seat of the diocese to which Barro Alto’s parish belongs and one of the gateways to Serra da Mesa Lake, a huge reservoir on the Tocantins River.

  • Set aside the day to see the lake and have fish for lunch in the region.
  • Boat trips, fishing and access to the water depend on local operators and rules: ask in Uruaçu before booking.
  • Return to Barro Alto before dark or continue your journey along the BR-153.

Tips

  • Fill up before each stretch.
  • Drive in daylight where possible: there are animals on the road in rural areas.
  • In the rainy season (November to March), allow extra time.
